Installation Guide – Large Basket Weave Carrara & Dolomite Marble Mosaic Tile

Step 1: Prepare the Surface – Build a Strong Foundation

Start by cleaning the substrate thoroughly, making sure it’s free from dust, oils, or loose debris. The surface must be level, solid, and free of cracks. In wet areas such as showers, apply a waterproofing membrane for added protection. Remove outlet covers, trims, or any obstacles before beginning. If the surface is uneven, use a leveling compound to achieve a smooth base.

Step 2: Plan the Layout – Ensure Perfect Symmetry

Find the center point of the wall or floor to create a balanced starting point. Lay a few sheets dry to check for natural color flow between the Carrara and Dolomite pieces. Adjust placement to avoid awkward cuts along edges. Maintain consistent spacing between sheets (about 1.5–3 mm) for even grout lines.

Step 3: Apply the Adhesive – Choose a Stone-Safe Thin-Set

For best results, use a white, non-staining thin-set mortar formulated for marble and other natural stones. Trusted options include Mapei, Laticrete, and Ardex. Mix in small batches that can be used within 30 minutes. Apply mortar with a 1/4″ notched trowel—spread with the flat side, then comb at a 45° angle for even coverage. Back-butter each sheet before placing to enhance adhesion and reduce lippage. Work in manageable sections.

Step 4: Cutting & Fitting – Work with Precision

When cutting, use a wet saw with a fine diamond blade to minimize chipping. Mark cuts carefully and smooth edges with a stone file to protect the polished finish. Always dry-fit sheets before final placement to ensure alignment with the basket weave pattern.

Step 5: Set the Tiles – Keep the Pattern Consistent

Begin at the center and work outward. Press each mesh-backed sheet gently but firmly into the thin-set. Use spacers for consistent joints and tap lightly with a rubber mallet to level the surface. Wipe away excess adhesive immediately with a damp sponge to protect the polished marble. Allow at least 24 hours of curing before moving on to grout.

Step 6: Grout & Seal – Lock in the Finish

Use non-sanded grout to avoid scratching the polished marble. Apply diagonally across joints with a rubber float, ensuring complete coverage. Clean excess grout promptly, and after 15–20 minutes buff the surface with a soft cloth to remove haze. Let grout cure for 72 hours before applying a penetrating sealer designed for marble. This will protect against water, stains, and etching.

Care & Maintenance – Keep It Looking Fresh

• Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner only.

• Avoid acidic or abrasive products that can dull the polish.

• Reseal periodically based on usage and exposure.

• Place felt pads under furniture to protect surfaces from scratches.
