Step 1: Base Preparation – Level and Stable Surface
Excavate the area to the required depth for sand or mortar base.
Compact the soil thoroughly and lay a 2–4″ layer of crushed stone or gravel for proper drainage.
Screed a layer of sand or mortar to create a smooth, level foundation.
Ensure slight slope (1/4″ per foot) for outdoor applications to prevent water pooling.
Step 2: Dry Layout – Visual Planning
Dry-lay several sets of tiles to preview the French Pattern arrangement.
Mix pieces from multiple crates for consistent color blending and natural variation.
Mark centerlines or reference points for a balanced installation.
Step 3: Setting the Tiles – Adhesive or Dry-Set Method
Sand-set method: place tiles directly on the screeded sand layer and tap into place with a rubber mallet.
Mortar method: spread a layer of flexible thin-set mortar and back-butter each tile to ensure full contact.
Ensure tiles are level and aligned; adjust with a mallet or leveling system as needed.
Step 4: Joint Spacing – Natural Look
Maintain 1/8″–1/4″ spacing between leathered edges to preserve the rustic texture.
Adjust spacing with spacers or by hand for even, natural gaps.
Step 5: Filling Joints
Fill joints with sand, polymeric sand, or non-sanded grout depending on installation method.
