Installation Guide – Ivory 24″x24″ Tumbled Travertine Paver
Material Overview
The Ivory 24″x24″ paver is made from natural travertine with a tumbled finish, offering a large-format option for outdoor spaces. Ideal for patios, courtyards, walkways, and pool decks, it is not recommended for vehicular traffic. Due to its weight, a stable, well-compacted sub-base is essential for long-term performance.
Step 1: Excavation & Base Preparation (Dry-Set)
Excavate the area to a depth of 6″–8″, considering local soil and freeze conditions.
Lay 4″–6″ of compacted crushed stone or road base in layers, compacting each with a plate compactor.
Add 1″ of bedding sand (concrete sand or screened sand) and screed it to level.
Step 2: Laying the Pavers
Arrange 24″x24″ pavers in a running bond or grid pattern to minimize lippage.
Ensure each paver is fully seated into the sand base to prevent rocking or uneven surfaces.
Maintain consistent spacing of 1/8″–1/4″, using spacers if necessary.
Step 3: Leveling & Adjustment
Step 4: Joint Sand Application
Sweep polymeric joint sand into all joints to lock the layout.
Compact the surface using a plate compactor fitted with a rubber mat to protect edges.
Reapply sand and compact again if necessary, then lightly mist with water to activate the binding.
Alternative: Wet-Set Installation
Install pavers over a concrete slab using thin-set mortar with a 1/2″ notched trowel.
Back-butter each tile for full adhesion and to prevent hollow spots.
Clean mortar from joints and surfaces before it hardens.
Sealing & Maintenance
Apply a penetrating sealer suitable for travertine and outdoor use; avoid topical sealers that trap moisture.
Reapply sealer every 1–2 years, depending on sun and water exposure.
Clean with a soft brush and pH-neutral stone cleaner; avoid acidic or harsh cleaners.
Disclaimer
Travertine is a natural stone with pores, color variations, and occasional fossil markings. Proper base preparation and careful handling are crucial for large-format pavers to prevent cracking or shifting. Always follow local building codes and test a small area before full installation.
