Carrara Marble Tile 18″x36″ Honed – Installation Guide

Step 1: Surface Preparation – Solid, Level & Clean

Ensure the substrate is flat, dry, and structurally sound, with no more than 1/8″ variation over 10 feet. Remove dust, oils, and debris, using a vacuum and damp cloth. For large-format tiles, consider a self-leveling underlayment. Apply a waterproof membrane in wet areas such as showers or backsplashes.

Step 2: Layout Planning – Harmonize Veining & Flow

Snap reference lines to guide placement and maintain symmetry. Dry-lay tiles to assess veining and tone, blending from multiple boxes for a natural look. Align beveled edges consistently for a polished, intentional pattern. Recommended grout joint: 1/16″–1/8″.

Step 3: Mortar Application – Secure Large Tiles

Recommended Mortars:

• Mapei Ultraflex LFT White

• Laticrete 4-XLT White

• Ardex X5 or X77 White

Use a 1/2″ square-notched trowel to spread mortar evenly. Back-butter each tile for full contact and to avoid voids. Place tiles while thin-set is still workable.

Step 4: Cutting & Fitting – Clean Precision

Cut tiles with a wet saw and continuous-rim diamond blade suitable for marble. Smooth cut edges with a stone file or polishing pad. Dry-fit all pieces to check alignment before final placement.

Step 5: Setting Tiles – Flat, Seamless Surface

Use a tile leveling system to prevent lippage. Press tiles into mortar evenly or tap gently with a rubber mallet. Remove excess mortar immediately from tiles and joints. Allow 24 hours for adhesive curing before grouting.

Step 6: Grouting & Sealing – Protect Your Marble

Pre-seal tiles with a penetrating, marble-safe sealer to prevent staining. Use non-sanded or fine-sanded grout to protect beveled edges. Apply grout diagonally with a rubber float and clean promptly. Buff haze with a soft cloth after 20–30 minutes. Re-seal tiles and grout after 72 hours for long-term protection.

Maintenance Tips – Keep Carrara Marble Beautiful

Clean only with pH-neutral stone cleaners. Avoid acidic or abrasive products. Wipe spills immediately to prevent stains or etching. Re-seal honed marble every 6–12 months, depending on usage. Protect high-traffic areas with felt pads under furniture and rugs.
