Installation Guide – Ivory 16″x24″ Tumbled Travertine Tile
Important Notes
Made from natural travertine with a tumbled finish.
Suitable for both indoor and outdoor horizontal surfaces such as floors, patios, and pool decks.
Travertine is porous and must be sealed before and after installation.
Step 1: Prepare the Surface
Ensure the substrate is level, clean, dry, and structurally sound.
Acceptable surfaces include concrete slabs, mortar beds, cement board (for interior), or exterior-rated surfaces.
Use crack isolation or waterproofing membranes as needed, especially in wet or exterior areas.
Step 2: Plan Your Layout
Dry lay the tiles to balance color variations and visualize the pattern.
Recommended layouts: running bond or French pattern.
Use spacers to keep grout lines even (1/8″–1/4″ typical for tumbled travertine).
Step 3: Apply Adhesive
Recommended Mortars:
Instructions:
Spread thinset with a 1/2″ notched trowel for full coverage.
Back-butter each tile to ensure proper adhesion and avoid hollow spots.
Gently tap tiles into place with a rubber mallet.
Step 4: Cutting Tiles
Step 5: Grouting
Allow mortar to cure for 24 hours before grouting.
Choose non-sanded or sanded grout based on joint size (wider joints typically need sanded grout).
Tumbled travertine may require grout release or pre-sealing to prevent staining.
Step 6: Sealing
Pre-seal tiles before grouting with a penetrating, breathable sealer.
After installation, apply a second sealer to protect against moisture, stains, and etching.
Reapply sealer every 1–2 years or as needed based on traffic and exposure.
Maintenance
Clean with a pH-neutral, non-acidic stone cleaner.
Avoid vinegar, bleach, or ammonia-based products.
Use rugs or mats in high-traffic areas to minimize wear.
Disclaimer
Travertine is naturally porous, with color variations, textures, and pits that are part of its inherent beauty. Always follow ANSI and TCNA standards for natural stone installation and consult the adhesive manufacturer to ensure product compatibility.
