Installation Guide – Royal Beige Honeycomb 4″ Honed Marble Mosaic Tile

Material Overview

Crafted from natural Royal Beige marble with a honed (matte) finish.
Large 4″ hexagon chips, mesh-mounted on sheets (~12″x12″).
Suitable for walls, backsplashes, shower surrounds, and light-traffic residential floors. Confirm slip resistance for wet areas.

Step 1: Surface Preparation

Ensure substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and level (≤1/8″ variation over 10′). Patch or skim as needed.
Approved surfaces: cement backer board, properly cured concrete, or ANSI-compliant mortar beds.
In wet areas, install a waterproofing membrane (ANSI A118.10); shower floors require a ¼” per foot slope toward the drain.
Use white thin-set beneath light beige marble to avoid shadowing or discoloration.

Step 2: Dry Layout & Planning

Mix sheets from multiple boxes to balance natural color and veining.
Snap level reference lines to maintain straight hex rows; plan perimeter cuts carefully (aim for half-hex at edges).
Trim mesh edges so sheets interlock seamlessly; stagger seams to prevent a visible grid.

Step 3: Adhesive Application

Recommended Adhesive: White, polymer-modified thin-set suitable for natural stone (ANSI A118.4/A118.15). Avoid premixed mastics, particularly in wet areas.
Troweling:
- For flat surfaces, use 1/4″ × 1/4″ square-notch; if minor irregularities exist, 1/4″ × 3/8″ is acceptable.
- Flatten ridges lightly after combing to prevent telegraphing through hex tiles.
- Work in manageable areas to prevent thin-set from skinning (≈10–15 minutes).

Step 4: Setting the Sheets

Align the first sheet with reference lines and press with a rubber float or beating block for full contact.
Maintain factory spacing (≈1/8″); do not butt tiles together.
Correct lippage by lifting and resetting sheets; back-butter individual tiles if needed.
Immediately remove excess thin-set from joints and tile faces with a damp sponge.

Step 5: Cutting & Detailing

Use a wet saw with a continuous-rim diamond blade. Taping the cut line helps prevent chipping.
Smooth exposed edges with a rubbing stone; finish edges with stone trim, metal profiles, or matching moldings.

Step 6: Grouting (Honed Marble)

Allow thin-set to cure (≈24 hours).
For joints ≤1/8″, use unsanded grout; for 1/8″–3/16″ joints, a fine-aggregate, marble-safe grout is recommended—test first.
Optionally, apply a marble-safe grout release or pre-seal to minimize staining.
Pack joints diagonally with a rubber float; clean with minimal water to prevent washout or discoloration.

Step 7: Sealing

After grout cures (≈72 hours), apply a penetrating, breathable sealer suitable for marble and grout.
Reapply sealer periodically based on exposure (e.g., every 1–2 years in wet or high-traffic areas).

Maintenance

Clean with pH-neutral, non-abrasive stone cleaners only; avoid acids, bleach, vinegar, or abrasive pads.
In showers, squeegee or dry-wipe to prevent mineral buildup; use marble-safe scale removers if necessary.

Movement Joints

Respect structural and building movement joints; provide soft joints at perimeters, changes in plane, and large surfaces (TCNA EJ171).
Use 100% stone-safe silicone in inside corners and where tile meets other materials.

Important Notes & Disclaimer

Natural marble exhibits variations in tone, veining, and slight size/thickness tolerances. Dry-lay sheets to blend colors before setting.
Flatness of the substrate is critical for 4″ hex mosaics; correct uneven surfaces before installation.
