Installation Guide – Calacatta White 1″x4″ Herringbone Honed Marble Mosaic Tile

Material Overview

  • Made from natural Calacatta white marble with soft gray veining and a honed (matte) surface.

  • Composed of 1″x4″ linear strips arranged in a herringbone pattern on mesh sheets (~12″x12″; some lots may be paper-faced).

  • Suitable for walls, backsplashes, shower surrounds, and light-traffic residential flooring. Multiple grout lines offer better traction compared to large-format tiles.

Step 1: Prepare the Surface

  • Ensure the substrate is clean, dry, rigid, and flat (≤1/8″ over 10′; ideally ≤1/16″ for long, narrow strips). Patch or skim coat as necessary.

  • Acceptable substrates: cement backer board, properly cured concrete, or a mortar bed meeting ANSI standards.

  • For wet areas: apply an ANSI A118.10 waterproof membrane. Shower floors should slope 1/4″ per foot toward the drain.

  • Always use white-setting materials under light marble to prevent shadowing or discoloration.

Step 2: Dry Layout & Planning

  • Mix sheets from multiple boxes to balance natural variations in color and veining.

  • Snap level and plumb reference lines to maintain the correct herringbone angle.

  • Stagger sheet seams to hide mesh edges and trim for tight interlock.

  • Pre-plan cuts around edges, corners, and fixtures to avoid narrow slivers and maintain pattern continuity.

Step 3: Apply Adhesive

Recommended Material:

  • White, polymer-modified thin-set mortar for natural stone (ANSI A118.4/A118.15). Avoid premixed mastics, especially in wet areas.

Application Technique:

  • Use a 3/16″ V-notch or 1/4″x3/16″ V-notch trowel.

  • Press mortar into the substrate with the flat side, comb in one direction, then lightly flatten ridges.

  • Work in sections small enough to tile within 10–15 minutes before the mortar skins.

Step 4: Setting the Sheets

  • Align the first sheet to your reference lines and press in using a rubber float or beating block for full contact.

  • Use wedge spacers as needed to maintain straight linear joints and consistent herringbone angles.

  • Back-butter strips if mesh irregularities cause lippage; adjust immediately if necessary.

  • Remove excess mortar from joints and faces with a barely damp sponge.

  • For paper-faced sheets: set sheets, beat in lightly, wet paper after initial grab (≈10–20 min), remove paper, and true up joints before mortar fully sets.

Step 5: Cutting & Detailing

  • Use a wet saw with a continuous-rim diamond blade; apply painter’s tape on cut lines to reduce chipping.

  • For small trims, use mosaic nippers sparingly and smooth edges with a rubbing stone.

  • Finish exposed edges with stone trims, metal profiles, or matching moldings.

Step 6: Grouting (Honed Marble)

  • Allow thin-set to cure (typically 24 hours).

  • Joints ≤1/8″: use unsanded grout. For 1/8″–3/16″: use fine-aggregate, marble-safe grout (test first for abrasion).

  • Optionally, apply grout release or pre-seal to prevent staining; choose light neutral colors for a soft, elegant look.

  • Pack grout diagonally and clean with minimal water to avoid washout or shading.

Step 7: Sealing

  • After grout cures (≈72 hours), apply a penetrating, breathable sealer suitable for marble and grout to protect the surface while maintaining the honed finish.

  • Reapply periodically depending on exposure (typically every 1–2 years in wet or high-traffic areas).

Maintenance Tips

  • Clean with pH-neutral, non-abrasive stone cleaners. Avoid acids, vinegar, bleach, and abrasive pads, as marble can etch.

  • In showers, squeegee or wipe surfaces dry after use to reduce mineral deposits. Use marble-safe scale removers if necessary.

Movement Joints

  • Respect structural/expansion joints and provide soft joints as per TCNA EJ171 at perimeters and changes of plane.

  • Use 100% stone-safe silicone in corners and where tile meets other materials.

Important Notes & Disclaimer

  • Natural Calacatta varies in color and veining; always dry-lay and blend sheets before installation.

  • Flat, level substrates are critical for long, thin strips.

  • Avoid glossy coatings unless a polished look is desired—they may alter the honed appearance.

  • Stonemarket USA is not responsible for substrate issues or improper installation. Professional installation is strongly recommended.
