Installation Guide – Dolomite & Carrara Touch Polished Marble Mosaic Tile
Material Notes
Two-stone combination: Dolomite (bright white) + Carrara (white with soft gray veining), both polished.
Factory-mounted mosaic sheets (~12″×12″) with preset chip spacing; some sheets may be paper-faced.
Suitable for walls, backsplashes, shower surrounds, and light-traffic residential floors. Polished surfaces may be slippery when wet.
Step 1: Surface Preparation – Clean, Flat, and Stable
Substrate must be rigid, level (≤1/8″ over 10′), clean, and dry. Patch or skim as needed.
Approved substrates: cement backer board, properly cured concrete, or ANSI-compliant mortar beds.
Wet areas: apply an ANSI A118.10 waterproofing membrane per manufacturer instructions.
Step 2: Dry Layout & Tone Blending
Dry-lay several sheets to balance Dolomite and Carrara tones across the installation.
Snap reference lines for level installation.
Plan perimeter and fixture cuts to avoid narrow slivers.
Trim mesh edges and stagger sheet seams to make the sheet grid invisible.
Step 3: Adhesive Application – White Thin-Set
Recommended: White, polymer-modified thin-set (ANSI A118.4/A118.15). Avoid premixed mastics.
White mortar prevents shadowing under light-toned stones.
Trowel: 3/16″ V-notch (or 1/4″×3/16″ V-notch) on flat substrates.
Key in adhesive with flat side, comb in one direction, lightly flatten ridges.
Work in areas that can be covered in 10–15 minutes to avoid skinning.
Step 4: Setting the Sheets
Align sheets to layout lines; press firmly using a rubber grout float or beating block.
Maintain factory chip spacing; do not butt-joint. Use wedge spacers if needed.
Back-butter chips as needed; adjust immediately if lippage occurs.
Remove excess thin-set from joints and faces immediately with a soft, slightly damp sponge or microfiber cloth.
For paper-faced sheets: wet paper lightly after initial set, remove after 10–20 minutes, then true up joints.
Step 5: Cutting & Detailing
Use a wet saw with a continuous-rim diamond blade. Apply painter’s tape along cut lines to reduce chipping.
Use mosaic nippers sparingly for small trims; smooth edges with a rubbing stone.
Finish exposed edges with stone trim, metal profiles, or matching moldings.
Step 6: Grouting Polished Marble
Allow thin-set to cure (typically 24 hours).
Use unsanded grout for joints ≤1/8″ to protect polished surfaces.
Recommended grout colors: light neutrals, ivory, or soft gray. Test before full application.
Optional: apply marble-safe grout release or pre-seal to reduce staining.
Pack joints diagonally with a rubber float; clean with minimal water to avoid shading or washout.
Step 7: Sealing
After grout cures (~72 hours), apply a penetrating, breathable sealer suitable for marble and grout.
Re-seal periodically (every 1–2 years in wet or high-use areas).
Maintenance
Clean with pH-neutral, non-abrasive stone cleaners; avoid acids, bleach, vinegar, or abrasive pads.
In showers, squeegee or wipe dry after use. Use marble-safe scale removers if needed.
Movement Joints
Honor expansion joints per TCNA EJ171 at perimeters, changes of plane, and transitions.
Use 100% stone-safe silicone where tile meets other materials.
Important Notes & Disclaimer
Natural stone varies in tone and veining; mix sheets before setting.
Slight size or thickness variations are normal in mosaics.
Protect polished faces during handling and cleanup with soft sponges or microfiber cloths.
