Installation Guide – Royal Beige Strip Linear Polished Marble Mosaic Tile

Material Overview

Material: Natural Royal Beige marble with a polished finish
Format: Linear strip mosaics, mesh-mounted (~12″x12″ sheets; some lots may be paper-faced)
Applications: Walls, backsplashes, shower surrounds, and light-traffic residential floors (verify slip requirements in wet areas)

Step 1: Surface Preparation

Ensure the substrate is clean, dry, and flat (≤1/8″ variation in 10′). Patch or skim-coat as needed.
Approved substrates: cement backer board, cured concrete, or ANSI-compliant mortar bed.
In wet areas, install ANSI A118.10 waterproofing per manufacturer instructions.

Step 2: Dry Layout & Planning

Blend sheets from multiple boxes to distribute natural shade and veining.
Snap level reference lines and confirm the running direction of linear strips.
Stagger sheet seams and trim mesh edges so strips interlock and sheet grid disappears.
Plan perimeter and obstacle cuts to avoid narrow slivers and maintain continuous lines.

Step 3: Adhesive (White Thin-Set) Application

Use white, polymer-modified thin-set (ANSI A118.4/A118.15) rated for natural stone. Avoid premixed mastics in wet areas.
Recommended trowel: 3/16″ V-notch or 1/4″x3/16″ V-notch.
Key in with flat side, comb in one direction, and lightly flatten ridges to prevent telegraphing through thin strips.
Work in areas you can cover within 10–15 minutes to prevent skinning.

Step 4: Setting the Sheets

Align sheets to reference lines; press with a rubber grout float or beating block for full contact and flat plane.
Use wedge spacers to maintain straight, uniform linear joints.
Back-butter individual strips if necessary; lift and reset immediately if lippage occurs.
Clean excess thin-set from joints and faces promptly with a damp sponge.
For paper-faced sheets: set paper-side out, beat in, lightly dampen after initial grab (≈10–20 min), remove paper, and true up joints.

Step 5: Cutting & Detailing

Use a wet saw with continuous-rim diamond blade; apply painter’s tape over cut lines to minimize chipping.
For small trims, use mosaic nippers sparingly; smooth edges with a rubbing stone.
Finish exposed edges with stone trim, metal profiles, or matching moldings.

Step 6: Grouting (Polished Marble)

Allow thin-set to cure (≈24 hours).
Use unsanded grout for joints ≤1/8″ to protect the polished surface.
For light beige marble, optionally apply grout release or pre-seal to reduce pigment uptake.
Pack joints diagonally with a rubber float; clean with minimal water to avoid washout or shading.

Step 7: Sealing

After grout cures (≈72 hours), apply a penetrating, breathable sealer approved for marble and grout.
Reapply periodically (every 1–2 years) depending on exposure and usage.

Maintenance

Clean only with pH-neutral, non-abrasive cleaners; avoid acids, bleach, vinegar, or abrasive pads.
In showers, wipe or squeegee dry to minimize mineral deposits; use marble-safe scale removers if necessary.

Movement Joints

Honor structural joints and provide soft joints per TCNA EJ171 at perimeters, changes of plane, and large expanses.
Use 100% stone-safe silicone at inside corners and where tile meets dissimilar materials.

Important Notes & Disclaimer

Always use white thin-set beneath light beige marble to prevent shadowing or picture framing.
