Step 1: Base Preparation – Strong & Even Foundation
Excavate the designated area to the depth required for a sand or mortar base.
Compact the subsoil firmly, then spread a 2–4″ layer of crushed stone or gravel.
Ensure proper drainage by maintaining a slope of 1/4″ per foot for outdoor projects.
Screed a layer of sand or mortar to achieve a smooth, level setting surface.
Step 2: Dry Layout – Plan the French Pattern
Dry-lay the pavers to visualize the French Pattern design and check tone variation.
Blend pieces from multiple crates for natural color and veining consistency.
Use centerlines or reference points to keep the layout symmetrical and balanced.
Step 3: Installing the Pavers – Sand-Set or Mortar Method
Sand-Set: Position the pavers over the screeded sand and lightly tap into place.
Mortar-Set: Spread a flexible thin-set mortar and back-butter each paver for full adhesion.
Use a rubber mallet and long level to ensure an even, flush surface.
