Installation Guide – Milas White Herringbone 1″x6″ Honed Marble Mosaic Tile

Material Overview

  • Crafted from natural Milas White marble with a smooth honed (matte) finish.

  • 1″x6″ strips arranged in a classic herringbone pattern, typically mesh-mounted (approx. 12″x12″ sheets; some lots may be paper-faced).

  • Ideal for walls, backsplashes, shower surrounds, and light residential floors. Numerous grout joints help increase slip resistance.

Step 1: Surface Preparation

  • Ensure the substrate is clean, dry, rigid, and extremely flat (≤1/8″ variation in 10’; ≤1/16″ preferred for long linear tiles).

  • Approved substrates: cement backer board, cured concrete, or mortar bed (per ANSI standards).

  • In wet areas, apply ANSI A118.10 waterproofing; shower floors must have a ¼” per foot slope.

  • Always use white setting materials under light marble to prevent shadowing.

Step 2: Dry Layout & Planning

  • Blend sheets from multiple boxes to balance natural shade and vein variation.

  • Snap level reference lines to maintain herringbone alignment.

  • Stagger seams so mesh lines disappear; trim sheet edges for tight interlocks.

  • Pre-plan cuts around edges and fixtures to avoid awkward slivers and preserve pattern flow.

Step 3: Adhesive Application

  • Use white, polymer-modified thin-set mortar (ANSI A118.4/A118.15). Do not use premixed mastic, especially in wet areas.

  • Recommended trowel: 3/16″ V-notch or 1/4″x3/16″ V-notch.

  • Spread thin-set in one direction, flatten ridges to avoid telegraphing through strips.

  • Work in small sections to prevent mortar skinning.

Step 4: Setting the Sheets

  • Align the first sheet with reference lines; press in using a grout float or beating block for full contact.

  • Use wedge spacers to keep lines straight and angles consistent.

  • Back-butter strips if needed to correct lippage.

  • Clean thin-set from joints and surfaces immediately with a damp sponge.

  • For paper-faced sheets: set with paper outward, press firmly, mist paper after 10–20 minutes, then remove and adjust joints.

Step 5: Cutting & Detailing

  • Cut with a wet saw and continuous-rim diamond blade; tape cut lines to reduce chipping.

  • For fine trims, use nippers sparingly; smooth edges with a rubbing stone.

  • Finish exposed edges with marble trim, metal profiles, or matching moldings.

Step 6: Grouting

  • Allow thin-set to cure for 24 hours.

  • For joints ≤1/8″, use unsanded grout; for wider joints, use a fine-aggregate grout tested for marble.

  • Consider grout release or pre-sealing to reduce staining.

  • Apply diagonally with a rubber float; clean with minimal water.

Step 7: Sealing

  • After grout cures (≈72 hours), apply a penetrating, breathable sealer for marble and grout.

  • Re-seal periodically (every 1–2 years in wet or high-use areas).

Maintenance

  • Clean only with pH-neutral, non-abrasive stone cleaners.

  • Avoid vinegar, bleach, acids, or abrasive pads.

  • In showers, wipe or squeegee after use to prevent buildup.

  • Use marble-safe descalers if needed.

Movement Joints

  • Follow TCNA EJ171 guidelines for movement joints.

  • Use 100% silicone (stone-safe) at perimeters, corners, and transitions.

Important Notes & Disclaimer

  • Natural marble varies in tone and veining—always dry-lay and blend sheets before installation.

  • Proper substrate preparation is critical; uneven bases may cause lippage.

  • Stonemarket USA is not responsible for improper installation or substrate issues. Professional installation is strongly recommended.
